China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) is expanding its chemical fertilizer production base in Dongfang City of southernmost Hainan Province, to make it China's largest.

Fang Yong, president of CNOOC Fudao Co., Ltd., which is responsible for the construction, said the base is undergoing a second-phase construction to give it an annual capacity of 800,000 tons of large granule urea and 450,000 tons of synthetic ammonia.

The expansion project is expected to cost 2.68 billion yuan ( 322.89 million U.S. dollars) and is scheduled for completion before the end of 2003.

The first-phase project, to create an annual capacity of 500, 000 tons of large granule urea and 300,000 tons of synthetic ammonia, started in 1996.

CNOOC sources said the company would also build a 600,000-ton per year compound fertilizer and a 600,000-ton per year methanol project in Dongfang City in the next three to five years, based on the rich natural gas resources.
