Sri Lanka Holds Local Government Elections

A total of 9,575,530 Sri Lankan voters out of 12,453,664 registered voters commenced polling Wednesday to select 3,463 members to 222 local government bodies.

A total of 9,575,530 Sri Lankan voters out of 12,453,664 registered voters commenced polling Wednesday to select 3,463 members to 222 local government bodies.

The voting started at 7 a.m. and will end at 4 p.m.. Voting for 69 local bodies in the war-torn north and the east has been fixed for March 25 while polling for 20 other local bodies, including Colombo Municipal Council, have been postponed following court orders for nominations that were rejected by elections commissioner to be accepted.

The last local government elections were held in 1997 and elections that were planned to be held in 2001 were postponed for this year.

Sri Lanka's local government structure totals 311, which comprises 18 Municipal Councils, 36 Urban Councils and 257 Pradesiya Sabaha (rural administrations).

Elections for three Municipal Councils, four Urban Councils and 13 Pradesiya Sabahas were postponed due to the court order.

Over 40,000 police officers and 20,000 home guards have been mobilized for election duty islandwide.
