Zimbabwe was suspended the membership of the Commonwealth for one year on Tuesday, according to a report reaching in Nairobi from London.
"The committee decided to suspend Zimbabwe from the councils of the Commonwealth for one year with immediate effect," said Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who is in London holding talks with the presidents of South Africa and Nigeria on the issue of Zimbabwe.
The suspension was carried out following the just-ended presidential election of Zimbabwe, which the West called unfair and not free. According to the official result of the poll, incumbent President Robert Mugabe won more than 56 percent of the valid votes, defeating his main rival Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change.
