Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday discussed with U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney on the Mideast situation over phone, Egypt's official MENA news agency said.

During the phone talks, Mubarak stressed the necessity of boosting cooperation among concerned parties to help reach a ceasefire between the Palestinians and Israelis and realize an Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian territories.

The two leaders discuss the Palestinian-Israeli violence within the context of Cheney's talks with Israeli officials and the outcome of efforts made by U.S. Mideast envoy Anthony Zinni.

On the same day, Cheney, before leaving Israel for Turkey, told reporters that the U.S. administration is determined to help Israel and the Palestinians achieve a ceasefire.

He said that the U.S. would remain "very actively engaged" in an effort to reach a truce between the two sides.

Cheney, who is on an 11-nation Mideast tour, visited Egypt last Wednesday, when he held talks with Mubarak on the Palestinian- Israeli violence, the Iraqi issue and the U.S.-led anti-terror campaign.
