A cotton and hemp depot in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region caught fire Tuesday morning, causing an estimated loss of 24 million yuan (2. 89 million U.S. dollars).

The blaze at the depot, located in a town in Turpan City, started at around 2:00 hrs. It was not extinguished until around 15:00 hrs due to strong wind and the late arrival of firefighters, which had been held up by a heavy snow.

At the time of the fire, 30,000 tones of cotton awaiting shipment to the state reserve warehouse was being stored. About 3, 000 tones of this was destroyed in the fire, say local firefighters.

Causes of the fire and concrete losses are still under investigation.
