Beijing's modernization drive should be completed by the year 2010, pledged the city official in charge of economic development planning Monday.

Jin Shengguan, head of Beijing Municipal Commission of Economic Development Planning, was briefing representatives of multinational firms about Beijing's policies regarding industrial development and investment.

Jin said that both China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Beijing's success in winning the Olympic Games in 2008 have injected vitality into the economic development of the Chinese capital and laid a solid foundation for attaining modernization goals by 2010.

"That will also help Beijing to fully adapt its economy to the international economy and in turn provide multinationals with more room for investment and development in Beijing," said Jin.

Beijing had kept a gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate above 11 percent over the past several years, giving it one of the fastest economic growth rates in the world, said Jin.

Over the past two decades, Beijing's total industrial output rise to 16 times its original value, sales revenue of industrial commodities increase by 26 times and gross industrial assets leap by 30 times.

Early last year, Beijing set goals to realize modernization by the year 2010, with the per capita GDP amounting to 6,000 U.S. dollars, and to become a "modernized international metropolitan" by the middle of this century.
