Germany to Stay Away From Unilateral U.S. Military Attack Against Iraq
A German government spokeswoman on Friday confirmed that Germany would not participate in the U.S.- led military action against Iraq if the much-talked assault is unsanctioned by the United Nations.
A German government spokeswoman on Friday confirmed that Germany would not participate in the U.S.- led military action against Iraq if the much-talked assault is unsanctioned by the United Nations.
Charima Reinhardt, the spokeswoman, said that a report on Thursday's "Sueddeutch Zeitung" was correct as it quoted Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as telling a group of German intellectuals that "if the United States decides on its own to attack (Iraq), Germany will not participate in the war."
Reinhardt said that Schroeder had conditioned the further military action by Germany on the protection of a U.N. mandate and that in the view of the German government, the current U.N. resolutions were not sufficient for an attack against Iraq.
She also said that Schroeder's position was agreed by his cabinet members and known to other European countries as well as the United States.
However, there has not been concrete evidence that Washington has planned a military action against Iraq, the German spokeswoman said.
