Guangdong, Macao and Hong Kong anti-drug authorities have mapped out a mechanism for future cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

Clarie Lo, commissioner for narcotics of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region (SAR), made the remarks at the forty-fifth session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotics Drugs (UNCND) being held in Vienna from March 11 to 15, 2002, according to a government press release Thursday.

Lo is attending the meeting as a member of the delegation of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

"In response to the UN's call to enhance cross-border cooperation in the fight against drugs, a two-day conference involving more than 350 anti-drug officials, experts and professionals from Guangdong, Macao and Hong Kong to share experience and information on key anti-drug issues was held in Hong Kong last November," Lo said.

"The conference succeeded in its aim to enhance mutual understanding of anti-drug policies in Guangdong, Macao and Hong Kong, and to map out a mechanism for future cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse in the three places."

She told the meeting that the Youth Forum, which formed part of the conference, was a positive response to the UN's call for strengthening communication between anti-drug policy makers and young people and engaging the latter in the formulation of preventive education and publicity policies.

The forty-fifth session of the UNCND also discussed the latest world drug abuse situation.
