Loving the country and abiding by laws are religion's tradition, according to Bishop Fu Tieshan, also a deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislative body.
Fu, chairman of the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, said, "Both the Christian religion and the Catholic religion have scored vigorous development since the founding of New China in 1949, with a substantial increase in the number of their respective believers."
"This suffices to prove that religions are free in China," he said, adding that two members of the presidium of the 5th Session of the 9th NPC are from the religious community.
He said, "I think believers of all religions must love China and abide by laws. This is the tradition of religions."
He noted that foreign religions must act to adapt the church to the socialist society.
The purpose of run a religion is to safeguard people's interests and the country's unification, and uphold the dignity of laws, he said, noting: "A religion must act so in any country."
