The United Nations disclosed here on Tuesday that a total of 313 people have died in a cholera outbreak in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since the beginning of this year.
Speaking at a news briefing, Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), also said that 3,882 cholera cases had also been registered in the DRC's Katanga province.
"Cholera exists in an endemic state in the DRC, and especially in the province of Katanga, but we are noticing since January and especially in February a sudden increase of the epidemic," she said.
The DRC government has set up a team for fighting the disease at the end of February. It is working with UN agencies including OCHA, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the World Food Program (WFP).
