Sri Lankan separatist Tamil Tiger rebels Monday denied categorically the accusations leveled against them by the United States that it is involved in activities that could jeopardize the permanent truce with the government last month.
Commenting on a press release issued by the United States embassy in Colombo, Anton Balasingham, chief negotiator and a senior leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) told the TamilNet website that the LTTE leadership has issued strict instructions to all its members in the north and east of the country to strictly observe the terms set in the ceasefire agreement which was effective on February 22.
He said that those LTTE rebels who are found guilty of violating the ceasefire will be severely punished.
He said that elements and forces seeking to subvert the peace process are engaged in criminal activities in the name of the LTTE in a bid to discredit the organization.
Earlier on Monday, the U.S. embassy said in a statement that they had credible reports that the LTTE rebels are engaged in continued recruitment of children, extortion, kidnapping of civilians and smuggling of weapons during the ceasefire. It warned that the LTTE activities would do harm to the organization and increase their isolation in the international community.
