US Warns Sri Lankan Tamil Rebels Against Truce Violation
The United States on Monday warned Sri Lankan separatist Tamil Tiger rebels that their violation of an indefinite ceasefire with the government under a truce agreement would do harm to the organization and increase international isolation.
The United States on Monday warned Sri Lankan separatist Tamil Tiger rebels that their violation of an indefinite ceasefire with the government under a truce agreement would do harm to the organization and increase international isolation.
"We have credible reports that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are engaged in activities that could jeopardize the recent indefinite ceasefire accord," the U.S. embassy here said in a statement.
Following the ceasefire which was effective on February 22, the LTTE's recruitment of children and extortion and abduction in the north and east has caused concern in the country. The ceasefire is seen as the first step toward a direct peace talks between the two sides.
The United States banned the LTTE as a foreign terrorist group in 1997. Last year Britain, Canada and Australia also listed the LTTE as terrorist groups.
"In the current international context in which terrorism is being condemned in more and more countries, the LTTE should be especially vigilant about observing the terms of the ceasefire accord," the statement said.
