Human Rights Well Protected in Law-Enforcement

While ensuring laws were observed and effectively enforced, Chinese law-enforcement agencies paid particular attention to protecting human rights over the past year, according to reports on the work of the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate to the on-going session of the National People's Congress Monday.

The people's courts at all levels declared 6,597 suspects innocent last year, according to the reports.

In his report, Xiao Yang, president of the Supreme People's Court, said that in handling criminal cases, the courts at all levels were strict with facts, evidence, procedures and application of law to make sure that the human rights of suspects were well protected and no people were wronged.

In his report, Han Zhubin, Chief Procurator of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, said that people's procuratorates at all levels made it a point of ensuring the litigation rights of litigators, seeing to it that facts are clear, evidence is full and laws are accurately applied. They also paid full attention to correcting such law-violating behaviors as extorting confessions by torture and extended detention.

Last year, the procuratorates at all levels decided on non-arrest of 93,760 suspects and non-prosecution of 26,373 suspects and wrote out corrections on 21,278 cases with regard to investigation, hearing and criminal punishments and corrected 56,389 extended detention cases.
