U.S. Demands Israel, Palestinians to Implement Tenet Plan

The United States on Friday criticized both Israel and Palestinians for the escalation of violence in the Middle East and called for the immediate implementation of an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan agreed to last year.
State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said both Israel and Palestinians should think through the consequences of the policies they were following.
"Both parties need to take a hard look at what they're doing now and take the necessary steps so that they can implement the Tenet Security Work Plan to forge a cease-fire and bring about a resumption of a political dialogue," he said.
U.S. President George W. Bush announced on Thursday that he was sending U.S. Middle East envoy Anthony Zinni back to the region to try to halt the escalating violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
"Zinni's goal is to get the parties to implement the Tenet security work plan steps immediately, to get them to take steps even before he gets there," Boucher said.
The Tenet plan, worked out by CIA director George Tenet on a Middle East trip in June, includes a cease-fire and a disengagement of forces, leading to a return to positions held before the Palestinian uprising broke out in September 2000.
