Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Friday called on the United States to act decisively to stem the spiral of violence in the Middle East.
Speaking at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in Trieste after a bilateral summit here, Berlusconi said the situation in the Middle East was "extremely serious and difficult."
"We hope that the United States will intervene with decision," he said, adding that the European Union was also ready to help in any way it could.
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has also asked Washington to step in to quell the crisis.
