China's top legislator Li Peng Friday joined deputies to the Fifth Session of the Ninth National People's Congress from Gansu and Yunnan provinces in separate panel discussions.
On both occasions, Li inquired about the situation of poverty reduction and urged them to work still harder for greater achievements in social and economic development.
Speaking to Gansu legislators, Li praised the province for its big progress in various fields. For example, it has attained self- sufficiency in grain production. Local living standards have improved, even for those people in abject poverty.
Gansu has a harsh natural environment, but it also enjoys a unique geographical advantage. The west-to-east natural gas pipeline, and the west-to-east electricity transmission project, both among the biggest infrastructure projects in China, are related with Gansu, Li said.
He added that Gansu holds an important position in linking central China with the vast northwest and has a great potential in advancing economic and trade ties between the two parts of China.
At the Yunnan delegation, Li said the province has rich tourism, biological and water resources, convenient air, railway, highway and water transportation networks, as well as big advantages in developing border trade.
Noting that Yunnan has done a good work in pursuing economic growth and ethnic harmony, the top legislator urged the province to make full use of its geographical position and rich resources.
He particularly stressed the need for Yunnan authorities to help the minority people there fight against poverty and promote the development of science and education, in a bid to further consolidate national unity.
