Chairman Li Peng of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) joined NPC deputies from Fujian and Sichuan provinces in deliberating reports on government work, social and economic development plan and budget Friday afternoon.

Li told the deputies from Fujian, which oversees the Xiamen special economic zone (SEZ) that the development of SEZs has contributed a lot to the reform and opening up of the whole country.

At present, efforts are needed for improving the legal environment and infrastructure facilities to meet the new situation brought about by China's entry into the World Trade Organization and maintain and develop the advantages of SEZs.

Development priority must be given to competitive industries and products while making good use of the rich labor resources and professionals there.

Fujian sees Taiwan across the Taiwan Straits and economic exchanges between the two places have been increasing day by day, Li noted, adding that efforts should be made to boost cross- Straits trade and economic cooperation for common development.

Cultural and educational exchanges between the two sides should also be strengthened to promote mutual understanding for the reunification of the motherland at an early date.

Talking with the NPC deputies from Sichuan, Li said the southwestern province has great potential for development and a bright prospect. With the implementation of the strategy to develop west China, a big number of infrastructure projects will be put under construction. This will bring new opportunities to the development of resources and tourism in the province.

Noting that the province is inhabited by many minorities, Li called for efforts to strengthen unity of all ethnic groups.

Li said the Communist Party of China will hold its 16th national congress in the latter half of this year and local authorities will stand for re-election. It is imperative to put clean and honest officials onto leading posts.
