Vice-Premier Li Lanqing encouraged all walks of life across the country to support elementary education in the western part of China.
He made the call Thursday at a group discussion of the deputies from Southwest China's Yunnan Province attending the ongoing annual session of the Ninth National People's Congress.
The vice premier urged governments at all levels to increase investment in elementary education.
He encouraged the economically developed East China provinces to assist western China in developing education and urban areas to assist rural areas.
He also urged efforts to make full use of information technology to carry out distance education in poverty-stricken areas and to train students and teachers there and to provide farmers with services on modern science and technology.
Li Lanqing said that it is necessary to develop education in tandem with agrosciences, open more vocational schools and train a contingent of people who would lead farmers in impoverished areas to fight and end poverty.
Due to historical reasons, education, science and technology in western China lag behind eastern China, thus holding back the local economic development.
