Chinese Coach Luo Brings Hope to English Badminton

English women shuttlers can never be as dominant as their eastern counterparts in the near future, but a Chinese coach has brought them the hope to win trophies in their own continent.
Luo Yun, a former singles player from China's star-studded women's national team, arrived from Australia early last year. In only one year's time, she has made a big difference.

Big Difference Made by Luo

  • Outstanding Achievements

  • Tracey Hallam, 27 later this month, coached by Luo, became the first English woman to win a World Grand Prix singles title for a decade in the Thailand Open last November.

Another English player, Julia Mann, 20, also shone in the European arena by winning the Portuguese International in January.

"The arrival of Luo has helped," Hallam said. "Being a former Chinese singles player, she has brought a different insight."

  • Luo's Way and Routines

  • "The big difference for me has been my movement. We have worked on that. With Luo the intensity in squad training is much harder. Previously routines were for two or three minutes maximum. But with her its more like 10 minutes. It's much more demanding but I have certainly reaped the benefit," she said.

Mann said of Luo: "She has made a tremendous difference. She takes a different perspective. She's very tactical and does a lot of video analysis. She talks about the game and tells us all about how the Chinese train and play.

"She works the others very hard. I'm used to it but I think it surprised some of them. But that little extra help."

    Chinese Coach Enjoy Great Credit

Stephen Baddeley, chief executive of Badminton Association of England, also gave a lot of credit to the Chinese coach.

"China have overwhelmingly dominated the women's game at international level since the Chinese Badminton Association returned to the IBF two decades ago. Luo was a top international player for China and her personal experience of their system and approach is now benefiting our top players and other coaches.

"That can only mean more success for England in the future," he said.
