CPPCC Chairman Calls for More Care for the Poor
Li Ruihuan Wednesday called on leading cadres at all levels to attach great importance to poverty relief. Facts show that to let some people get rich first is the best way to achieve common prosperity, but we must not forget those living in poverty, neither can we abandon those who are thrown into a difficult position by market competition.
Li Ruihuan, chairman of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Wednesday called on leading cadres at all levels to attach great importance to poverty relief.
Since the country's reform and opening-up, the policy of allowing some people to get rich first has promoted the productive forces and considerably improved people's living conditions in a short period of time, he said.
"Facts show that to let some people get rich first is the best way to achieve common prosperity," Li said at a group discussion of the Tianjin delegation on Premier Zhu Rongji's report on the work of the government.
Care for the poor required
"However, we must not forget those living in poverty, neither can we abandon those who are thrown into a difficult position by market competition," said Li, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.
He noted that care for the poor is not only a matter that concerns the basic living of some people but concerns social stability, people's feelings, the Party's ideal and cause, as well as the future of the nation.
"The economy we are building is a socialist market economy. If we are indifferent to the people in difficulty, we are losing the purpose of socialism," Li Ruihuan said.
