A cholera epidemic in Mozambique has killed 281 people in the past six months, according to Radio Mozambique on Wednesday.
Jose Chivale, the head of the Department of Epidemiology of the Health Ministry, was quoted as saying on Tuesday that the northern coastal province of Nampula was currently the worst affected, with about 750 people attending cholera treatment centers weekly in the region.
A total of 5,115 cholera cases have been recorded in Nampula since the outbreak of the disease, with 54 of these leading to death.
The northwestern province of Tete has recorded 3,484 cases and 57 mortalities in the same period.
Cholera is currently restricted to the central and northern provinces of Mozambique, with no cases being recorded in the southern provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane.
