China Mobile to Open GPRS Network in May

China Mobile would open its GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network in May, sources from the company said on March 5.

China Mobile would open its GPRS network in May, sources from the company said on March 5.

Construction of the GPRS network turned out smoother than expected and main technological difficulties had been overcome, China Mobile said.

GPRS refers to General Packet Radio Service, a transitional technology from GSM to WCDMA. China Mobile kicked off its global bidding for GPRS project on September 2000, in which four companies, Huawei, Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia were sorted out to provide basic equipment and service for the construction of GPRS network.

China Unicom, another mobile communication giant of China, chose CDMA as its transitional technology standard and opened its CDMA network last January, which had attracted some 600,000 users at the beginning of February. It can be expected that the opening of GPRS network would trigger off competition between China Mobile and China Unicom over "two and half generation" communication technologies.

December 21, 2000 saw China Mobile Communications Corporation announce the formal launch of the construction of GPRS network in Beijing with the first-phase of the project to be completed and put into operation in the second quarter of this year. By then cell phone users in 25 cities of 16 provinces in China will be able to enjoy the GPRS network featuring the wideband and high-speed service.
