Vice-President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that accelerating economic development, promoting reforms and improving the people's living standard are the central tasks for Tibet in the new historical era and the basis to solve all problems there.
This is of vital importance to strengthening the unity of various ethnic groups, maintaining social stability, reinforcing border defense and safeguarding the unification of the motherland.
The vice-president stressed that this is not only a major economic issue, but also an important political issue.
Hu, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during a group discussion with deputies to the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC) from remote Tibet Autonomous Region, southwest China.
The NPC deputies are here attending the annual session of the Ninth NPC, which opened Tuesday morning.
Hu expressed hope that CPC committees and governments at all levels in Tibet will seize favorable opportunities and work hard for a big leap forward in Tibet by giving full play to the market mechanism and government functions and combining development of the local rich resources with environmental protection.
