U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Monday that the escalating violence in the Middle East should prompt a renewed effort to achieve peace.
"The tragic situation should prepare us to continue our search for a solution," Annan said at a press encounter as he entered the U.N. headquarters in New York.
"I believe that when the killing is going on, it is even more urgent to intensify the search for peace. And I therefore think that the Crown Prince's ideas are still very useful and should be pursued," Annan said.
The ideas, initiated by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Abdullah in February, offers normalization of Arab relations with Israel in return for its withdrawal from all Arab lands occupied in the 1967 Middle East war.
Annan also urged both sides to do "whatever they can and whatever is possible to stop the cycle of violence."
