U.S. President George W. Bush on Monday mourned the deaths of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan and vowed to continue the anti-terror war until defeating the al Qaeda network.

"I think any time somebody loses their life, the American people will mourn and are sad -- and I feel that way too," Bush said in Minnesota. "On the other hand, I am just as determined now as I was a week ago or three months ago to fulfill this mission and that is to make sure our country is safe."

U.S. Defense Secretary Rumsfeld confirmed earlier in the day that nine American servicemen have been killed in latest U.S.-led assault in eastern Afghanistan, the most to die in combat since the war on terrorism began last October.

Rumsfeld said that six of the U.S. deaths came in a crash of helicopter hit in the region, but he did not provide details on the other casualties.
