Hong Kong's efforts to combat drug trafficking and money laundering were recognized by a report presented by the U.S. President George W. Bush to the U.S. Congress, according to a press release issued by HKSAR government on Monday.

"Hong Kong's law enforcement agencies accord high priority to the suppression of drug trafficking and the control of precursor chemicals," said the International Narcotics Control Strategy Report presented by President Bush to the congress on March on 2002.

"Hong Kong law enforcement officials continue to maintain a cooperative liaison relationship with their U.S. counterparts on narcotics and related criminal activities," it noted.

The report pointed out that Hong Kong maintains close links with the United Nations, the World Health Organization (WHO), FATF, INTERPOL, and the World Customs Organization (WCO) as well as individual governments around the world to combat narcotics trafficking and abuse.

On the anti-money laundering front, the report said that Hong Kong is recognized to be substantially in compliance with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF)'s 40 recommendations and has developed a strong anti-money laundering regime.

The report cited Hong Kong as a regional leader in its anti- money laundering efforts and recognized Hong Kong's leading role in the international arena by serving as the 2001-2002 FATF president.
