Chinese President Jiang Zemin reiterated Monday that the system of multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) remains the fundamental political system of China.
Consulting and seeking advices of democratic parties on major issues and especially accepting their supervision will help the CPC improve its leadership and governance as a ruling party, said Jiang, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
Jiang made the remarks while attending a joint meeting of members of the China Democratic League and China Zhi Gong Party who are here for the annual session of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which opened Sunday.
He called on non-Communist parties to carry out the fine tradition of cooperating closely with the CPC, take the country's central tasks and overall situation into account when playing their role in discussing and participating in state affairs, and contribute to the country's reform and modernization drive.
Jiang said after China joins the World Trade Organization, it is an urgent job to improve the competitiveness of Chinese industries and enterprises and the socialist market economic system, train and absorb more professional personnel, and establish and improve a social security system.
He expressed hope that the CPPCC members will carry out in-depth research into these major issues, and put forward good suggestions and proposals.
Li Ruihuan, chairman of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, was also present at the meeting.
At meeting, the CPPCC members held discussions on a wide range of issues including China's reunification cause, acceleration of reform in the education sector and poverty reduction in the western region.
