China's movie industry is now extremely short of "good stories", according to popular actress Pan Hong, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Pan said, "In making commercial movies, some people do not understand that the most important question is 'whether or not feature movies can win the audience'."

So, they cannot achieve their desired results, she said, adding that some people blindly compare their movie making to the making of foreign movies.

She said that in these people's view, a high funding input and a strong cast can make their movies appealing to the audience. "This is only one aspect of enabling their movies to be attractive. The crux of matter lies in the fact that their moves offer good stories," she noted.

The 1980s was the most splendid period for China's movie industry, she said, noting that the splendor found expression in many good stories.

In her view, movie themes should be diverse and should be closely linked to the daily life of moviegoers.

She said, "I think China's WTO accession has offered Chinese viewers an opportunity to enhance their appreciativeness of movies and posed a challenge to China's movie industry as well."

"We must compete with foreign movie makers on the same level and win back our own moviegoers," she said.
