The Sri Lankan government has agreed to appoint a parliamentary committee to assess the implementation of the recently agreed ceasefire between the government and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels monitored by an international monitoring team.
The Island newspaper said on Monday that the suggestion for the parliamentary committee to assess the implementation of the ceasefire on a continuing basis was made by leader of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party Batty Weerakoon.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who has fully agreed with the suggestion called for an early action to work out modalities for the committee to begin functioning rapidly.
He has suggested the committee comprises all political parties represented in Parliament to assess on a continuing basis the progress made in respect of the implementation of the ceasefire.
