The United Nations Secretary- General Kofi Annan is delighted that the people of Switzerland have voted in favor of U.N. membership, Serget Ordjonikidze, Director of the U.N. office in Geneva, told the press here on Sunday.

Annan said in his statement that Switzerland has long been a member of many agencies and programs of the U.N. family and is host to the second largest U.N. center in the world.

He said "Switzerland's entry as a full member will enable it to make its voice heard and influence felt across the full range of the United Nations' work. It will also mark an important step towards completing the universality of the Organization."

Annan looks forward to Switzerland's engaged and constructive participation in the work of the United Nations and extends his warmest welcome to this first new member state of the new Millennium.

Ordjonikidze said that with Switzerland joining the U.N., the world body will become truly universal. Both the country and the United Nations will benefit from it, he added.
