Switzerland Says 'Yes' to U.N. Membership
Switzerland said "yes" Sunday to joining the United Nations, with both the people and cantons accepting the initiative on the country's U.N. membership.

Some 55 percent of people and 12 cantons of its 23 cantons voted for the U.N. membership.
President of the Confederation Kaspar Villiger said to the press through TV that he is delighted to know the result of the ballot.
He believed that joining U.N. will be good for the image and interests of Switzerland.
The Swiss Federal Council issued a statement here saying that the it is very encouraged about this important step in domestic and foreign policy. It considers that Switzerland will now be better able to safeguard its interests and assume its responsibilities in the world.
Last vote for the U.N. membership took place in 1986 and the majority of Swiss said "no" .
