The People's Daily, the leading national newspaper in China, carries an editorial Sunday, hailing the opening of the Fifth Session of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
The People's Daily, the leading national newspaper in China, carries an editorial Sunday, hailing the opening of the Fifth Session of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
The editorial says the session, which begins Sunday, is of great significance as CPPCC National Committee members will offer their advice and proposals to the central government for this year's reform and construction.
The Chinese people have made great achievements on reform, opening-up and socialist modernization construction last year under the leadership of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with Jiang Zemin at its core, it says.
According to the editorial, in 2001, China celebrated the 80th anniversary of the CPC, set the historic target for the CPC in the new century, made great progresses in Party building, China's economy maintained strong momentum under the world's sluggish economic situation, China entered the World Trade Organization (WTO), and Beijing succeeded in winning the bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.
"This year is very important for both the Party and the country," says the editorial, adding that the 16th National Congress of the CPC will be held. China's entry into WTO has brought about both opportunities and challenges.
The major goal of the Fifth Session of the CPPCC National Committee is to work together to accomplish the tasks set for the reform and development, under the guidance of Deng Xiaoping Theory and the Party's policies.
In the past year, the CPPCC had made active contributions to consolidating and expanding the patriotic united front and promoting the reform, development and stability of the country.
Unity and democracy have been two major themes in the work of the CPPCC. The CPPCC will uphold democracy and play an active role in the construction of socialist democratic politics with Chinese characteristics, and unite with all patriotic forces to achieve the country's reunification, says the editorial.
CPPCC Tasks for 2002 Outlined
The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the broad-based national advisory body in China, will in 2002 continue to carry out activities aimed at promoting unity and cooperation and harmonious relations and easing social conflicts so as to rally all forces in the concerted efforts to realize the grand goal of the country.
The major tasks of the CPPCC were outlined by Ye Xuanping, vice chairman of the 9th CPPCC National Committee, at the opening of the Fifth Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee Sunday afternoon. (In Detail)
