The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) will provide useful information and suggestions based on the opinions of elite from all walks of life for the formation and implementation of the government's major policies this year, CPPCC National Committee Vice-chairman Ye Xuanping said Sunday.

The CPPCC will carry out in-depth study of some major issues so as to contribute to the overall work of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Ye said in a report on the work of the Standing Committee of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee to the committee's fifth session, which opened Sunday afternoon.

The CPPCC National Committee will follow closely how the information and suggestions are handled by government departments concerned, he said.

Ye said last year the CPPCC conducted research on a dozen key subjects, aiming at facilitating the implementation of the country new five-year social and economic development plan for 2001-2005.

In particular, the Ninth CPPCC Standing Committee organized research on major issues concerning the overall situation of the country's reform and construction, such as the government's proactive financial policy, the strategy of energy resources, and the integration of telecommunications, television and computer networks. The study of the advisory organization also covered such important issues as agricultural restructuring, western development, reform of the management system of state-owned assets, the south-to-north water diversion project, the establishment of

a social credit system, and the population and environment in northwestern areas. Quite a few of the research results of CPPCC members have be taken by the decision-making department as major

reference materials, Ye said.

In the meantime, the subcommittees of the CPPCC National Committee held consultations on some draft laws and administrative rules, and offered valuable opinions and suggestions to the legislature, Ye said.

This year, Ye said, the CPPCC will pay close attention to the impact of China's entry into the World Trade Organization on its economic and social development.

The CPPCC will continue in-depth research on the major issues concerning expanding domestic demand, industrial restructuring and the development of western China.

In the countryside, the CPPCC's study will cover boosting rural economic growth, increasing the farmers' income, and accelerating the modernization of agriculture.

The CPPCC will also offer suggestions for the reform of state-owned enterprises, employment and re-employment, the improvement of the social security system, the implementation of the strategy of revitalizing the country through science and education, and the promotion of cultural development, medical care and physical culture.

Ye said the CPPCC will pay close attention to issues concerning the mining industry and miners, family planning and improvement of the population quality, resources protection and the ecological environment for the promotion of sustainable economic and social development in the country.
