CPPCC Annual Session Opens

The Fifth Session of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) opened at the Great Hall of the People Sunday.
Among the Party and state leaders present at the event are Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing.

CPPCC Session Opens
The Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body, opened its fifth session Sunday in Beijing.

Li Ruihuan, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, announced the opening of the session at 3:00 pm. Top Party and state leaders Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing were present.

The CPPCC, founded in 1949, is a Chinese people's patriotic united front organization, a key institution of multi-party cooperation and political consultations under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and a major channel for promoting socialist democracy. Its annual session is a major event in the political life in China.

The current session, due to close on March 13, is attended by 2,082 of the 2,267 members of the CPPCC National Committee.

The session will discuss and approve a report on the work of the Standing Committee of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee by Vice-Chairman Ye Xuanping and a report on the handling of proposals put forward by CPPCC National Committee members since the last session.

The CPPCC members will also attend as observers the Fifth Session of the Ninth National People's Congress, China's the top legislature, and discuss Premier Zhu Rongji's report on government work.

In his report delivered at the opening meeting, Ye summed up the work of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee in the past year, which covers the organization's political consultations, democratic supervision and advice to the government, among others.

He claimed that the CPPCC has made its due contribution to "promote the nation's reform, development and stability."

The vice-chairman pointed out the year 2002 will be an important year in the history of China, when the new situation andnew tasks will pose higher demands to the CPPCC.

He stressed that the CPPCC will stick to the promotion of unity and democracy as the two most important themes in its work this year, calling on CPPCC members to make new contributions to China's modernization and reunification causes.

CPPCC National Committee Vice-Chairman Luo Haocai delivered a report on the handling of proposals raised by CPPCC members since the last session a year ago.

According to him, the CPPCC National Committee received 3,737 proposals from its members since the last session and 3,566 proposals were adopted.

By February 20 this year, the CPPCC National Committee had got answers to 3,527 of the proposals from relevant authorities, he said.

The vice-chairman called on CPPCC members to improve the quality of proposals, voice grassroots sentiments and coordinate closely with relevant authorities in handling the proposals.
