China's top advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), has been working hard for a better environment of the country, a senior official said Saturday.

Chen Bangzhu, chairman of the CPPCC Subcommittee of Human Resources and Environment, said last year his subcommittee carried out an in-depth research on seven of the country's major projects covering energy, population and south-to-north water diversion.

On the basis of the research, the subcommittee worked out six written reports and held six specialized lectures, including an international forum featuring "green and environmental protection" which was aimed at publicizing China's efforts to improve ecological protection and drew related information from more than 500 Chinese and foreign specialists and officials.

Energy was listed as a key research topic of the subcommittee. After field surveys on such strategic energy resources as petroleum, natural gas and coal in Heilongjiang, Guangdong, Sichuan, Beijing and Tianjin, the subcommittee made a forecast of China's strategic demand and the respective proportion of the energy resources in the coming 50 years.

In its research on the south-to-north water transfer project, Chen said, the subcommittee organized investigations in Libya, Egypt and Italy, putting forward a proposal that water should be sent through pipelines to ensure that Beijing and Tianjin have clean water supply.

Chen said environmental issues will remain a key part of his subcommittee's work agenda this year, and further research will be conducted into improvement of air quality in Beijing, environmental protection along the Yangtze River, family planning in areas inhabited by minorities, and tourism development and ecological agriculture in the western areas.
