Truce Agreement With Tamil Rebels Threat to Sovereignty: S.Lankan President
Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, in a letter to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has warned that the permanent ceasefire agreement signed with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels last Friday could carry a threat to the country's sovereignty.
Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, in a letter to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has warned that the permanent ceasefire agreement signed with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels last Friday could carry a threat to the country's sovereignty.
Kumaratunga's warning follows a report from a committee of her People's Alliance (PA) that had studied the agreement, The Island newspaper reported Friday.
In her letter, Kumaratunga said that she is not satisfied with allowing the head of the monitoring mission led by Norway to decide on demarcating the boundaries between the Tamil rebels controlled and Sri Lankan army controlled territories.
She said that giving such powers to the head of the monitoring mission carries a threat to the territorial integrity of the country.
The permanent ceasefire agreement differs to the agreement entered into by her former PA government by which the demarcation of boundaries was vested in the entire monitoring mission and not the head of the mission alone, she said.
There are many concerns in the agreement with regard to national security, she added.
Last Friday, Wickremesinghe signed a permanent ceasefire agreement with Tamil rebel leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran which has paved the way for direct talks between the two sides.
