The National Bureau of Statistics announced Thursday that the registered urban unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in 2001.
Last year 730.25 million people were employed, 9.4 million more than in 2000, according to the Statistical Communique on the 2001 National Economic and Social Development published by the NBS Thursday.
State-owned businesses laid off 5.15 million employees in 2001, 1.42 million less than the previous year and 2.27 million laid-off workers found new jobs.
The communique reported that 103.55 million people were covered by the unemployment insurance program and 3.12 million received financial help from the program last year.
Some 106 million employees and 33.46 million retired people had enrolled in the basic retirement security program by the end of 2001 and 76.29 million people were covered by the basic health care program.
The communique stated that 11.23 million urban residents receiving the minimum income or less had received life guarantee relief by the end of 2001 while over 90 percent of laid-off workers from state-owned businesses were receiving the minimum living income. Most retired people had their full retirement pension paid on time.
The country raised 4.1 billion yuan social welfare fund through sales of the welfare lottery, the communique said.
