Consuls-general in HK Welcome Tung's Winning Second Term

A number of consuls-general to Hong Kong on Thursday welcomed Tung Chee Hwa's winning a second five-year term as chief executive of the Hong Kong SAR, and expressed confidence that under the central government's support and Tung's leadership, Hong Kong will strengthen its position of the world economic and financial center and be built into an even better place.

Tung Chee Hwa Wins 2002 HKSAR Chief Executive Election
A number of consuls-general to Hong Kong on Thursday welcomed Tung Chee Hwa's winning a secondfive-year term as chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Russian Federation
Konstantin Vnukov, Consul-general of the Russian Federation in Hong Kong, expressed pleasure that Tung will continue to hold the post of the Chief Executive in the next five years.

"I consider the unanimous support of his candidacy by the Election Committee as a natural result of his activity in the capacity of the first chief executive," the consul general said immediately after the Registration and Electoral Office announced the nomination result Thursday afternoon.

"It is commonly recognized that during last five years, Tung personally and his highly professional administration succeeded not only in implementing the 'one country, two systems' principle,but in being able to stand up to heavy blow of the Asian financialcrisis," he said.

Vnukov believed that with support from the Chinese Central Government and all circles of the Hong Kong society, Hong Kong will find adequate answers to all challenges related to the world economy slowdown, and will manage to strengthen its position of the world economic and financial center.

European Commission
David Ting, head of office of the European Commission in Hong Kong, in a telephone interview with Xinhua, congratulated Tung forwinning a second term in office. He believed Tung, who had gained experiences during his first term as chief executive, will be moreexperienced in administrating the government during his second term.

In the last several years, Hong Kong has maintained its position as a world economic and financial center, Ting said, adding that Hong Kong has many winning edges such as its role as aworld financial and transport center and its outstanding professionals.

Ting expressed hope that during his second term, Tung will honor his commitments to Hong Kong, help Hong Kong people regain confidence against a backdrop of the world economic slowdown and build Hong Kong into an even better place.

Japan
Japanese Consulate General told Xinhua its congratulation to Tung's victory. "We are confident that under the continued thoughtful guidance and considered leadership of Tung Chee Hwa, Hong Kong people will work together to ensure that Asia's world-class city will continue to go from strength to strength in the future," the consulate said in a statement.

The statement approved of Tung's attitude in bravely facing difficulties like the Asian financial crisis under the unique and unprecedented concept of "one country, two systems" and praised his work over the past years as "thoughtful" and "successful."

Japanese Consulate General believed that Tung will enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness, further improve the infrastructure of Hong Kong's business environment and also help bring down costs in his second term.

It said an event called the JapanFest 2002 will be held in Hong Kong this year as part of the celebration in marking the 30th anniversary of the normalization of relations between Japan and China, hoping that the understanding and appreciation between Hong Kong and Japanese people will be further promoted.
