Top Lawmaker Meets HK Official

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met inBeijing with Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong Administrative Region (SAR), Elsie Leung, Wednesday.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met inBeijing with Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong Administrative Region (SAR), Elsie Leung, Wednesday.

In the meeting, Leung informed the top legislator of the work the SAR government has undertaken in the legal area.

Li praised the SAR government for its efforts in carrying out the principle of "one Country, two systems" and following the Basic Law of the HKSAR over the past five years.

The central government is satisfied with what the SAR government has done to safeguard Hong Kong's prosperity and stability and to ensure the fundamental interests of the people ofthe SAR, he said.

Li also informed Leung on the situation and development in mainland areas.
