A South Korean F-16C fighter jet crashed into farmland and exploded Tuesday, but its pilot ejected safely before the crash, air force authorities said.

"Immediately after taking off, the rear side of the plane's engine caught fire," an air force source said. "The pilot ejected to safety."

The aircraft went down at Seosan, South Chungcheong province, at 1:08 p.m. Flames as high as 50 meters blazed up and splinters landed more than 300 meters away. There were no residences near the crash site, and no civilian damage was reported.

The air force placed all F-16Cs on standby pending an investigation of the crash. The F-16C is manufactured in Korea based on technology provided by Lockheed Martin of the United States. Tuesday's accident was the third of its kind.
