The following is a review of major events in Sino-Vietnamese relations since their normalization 10 years ago:
In November 1991, Vietnamese Communist Party General-Secretary Do Muoi and Chairman of the Council of Ministers Vo Van Kiet paid an official visit to China, during which a joint communique was signed marking the normalization of the two neighbors.
On November 30-December 4, 1992, Chinese Premier Li Peng paid an official goodwill visit to Vietnam, during which four accords were signed on bilateral economic and technical cooperation, scientific and technological cooperation and culture exchange.
In October 1993, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan and his Vietnamese counterpart Vu Khoan formally signed in Hanoi an agreement on the basic principles for resolving territorial and border issues existing between the two countries.
In November 1993, Vietnamese President Le Duc Anh paid an official goodwill visit to China, the first by a Vietnamese head of state since the one by the late president Ho Chi Minh in 1959.
In November 1994, Chinese President Jiang Zemin paid an official goodwill visit to Vietnam, during which accords were inked on the establishment of a joint commission for economic and trade cooperation, automobile transportation and mutual inspection of the quality of imports and exports. The trip was hailed by both sides as a great success pushing traditional bilateral friendship to a new level.
On November 26-December 2, 1995, Vietnamese Communist Party General-Secretary Do Muoi visited China. A joint communique issued at the end of the trip highlighted the principles, agreements and understanding achieved by the two sides through various high-level meetings since 1991. The two sides reiterated their commitment to seek a resolution to their border issues through peaceful negotiations and to further develop their ties despite the existing differences. An agreement in principle was reached on the resumption of cross-border train services.
In June 1996, Chinese Premier Li Peng attended the Eighth National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV).
In July 1997, Vietnamese Communist Party General-Secretary Do Muoi paid a visit to China, during which he met with Chinese President Jiang Zemin. The two leaders exchanged views on bilateral relations and other issues of mutual concern and reached consensus on a wide range of issues.
In October 1998, Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai paid an official visit to China, during which he met Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji. Accords were signed on cross-border trade, consular cooperation and mutual judicial assistance.
In December 1998, Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao visited Vietnam. He held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Thi Binh and the two sides signed an agreement on economic and technological cooperation.
On February 25-March 2, 1999, Vietnamese Communist Party General-Secretary Le Kha Phieu paid a visit to China, during which a joint statement was issued setting forth the principle of building long-term, stable, future-oriented, good-neighborly and all-round cooperative bilateral relations.
In December 1999, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji visited Vietnam. He held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai and they conferred notes on bilateral relations, international and regional affairs and issues of mutual concern.
In December 1999, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cam signed in Hanoi the landmark Land Boundary Treaty between their two countries.
In June 2000, Vietnam and China exchanged documents on the ratification of a bilateral consular agreement.
On July 6, 2000, China and Vietnam exchanged instruments of ratification on their land border treaty, which took effect on the same day.
In December 2000, Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong paid an official goodwill visit to China, during which a joint statement was issued on the all-round development of bilateral relations in the new century. The two sides also signed accords on the demarcation of a sea border in the Beibu Gulf and fisheries cooperation in the waters.
In November 2001, Vietnamese Communist Party General-Secretary Nong Duc Manh visited China and met with Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
