Chinese Leaders Attend Lantern Festival Party
Chinese leaders Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing joined Beijing intellectuals to celebrate the Chinese traditional Lantern Festival at a gathering Tuesday evening. At the party vice-President Hu Jintao called on intellectuals to continue to work hard and strive for new vistories in the building of the country.
At the party hosted by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party of China (CPC), Vice-President Hu Jintao, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, extended greetings to those present and to intellectuals across the country on behalf of the CPC Central Committee.
Hu said that last year the CPC celebrated its 80th anniversary, China joined the World Trade Organization, won the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games, and successfully held the 9th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economic leaders' meeting.
Despite the sluggish global economic growth, the CPC and the Chinese people have worked together to achieve healthy economic growth and maintain social stability, noted Hu.
He stressed that intellectuals are an important force in the development of the country. He called on intellectuals to continue to work hard and strive for new vistories in the building of the country.
Theatrical performances were given by artists at the gathering.
Chinese Leaders Extend Spring Festival Greetings
On the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year, President Jiang Zemin extended greetings in Beijing to Chinese people of various ethnic groups including their compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as all overseas Chinese.
Jiang expressed his best wishes to all those people for the new year at a gathering to greet the traditional Spring Festival at the Great Hall of the People, which was held by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council. (In Detail)
