Sources from the Ministry of Education say that by the end of 2001, some 189,000 Chinese students have gone to study in the US since 1978, making the US a country with the biggest number of Chinese students there.
Statistics showed that since 1978, over 380,000 Chinese students have gone to study in the US, of them more than 53,000 were sent by the Chinese government.
In the year 2001 alone, there were some 78,000 Chinese students studying in the US, most for the master or doctor degrees of various majors.
In recent years, more and more Chinese students have gone abroad for study. In 1978, there were only 50 Chinese students studying in the US, but nowadays over 10,000 Chinese students go to study in the US every year.
Meanwhile, American students to study in China keep on rising. Currently, every year sees some 3,000 American students coming to study in China and the year 2001 alone witnessed 50,000 US students to have come here for study.
UK Probably Exceeds US
It has become a new upsurge for Chinese students to study in the UK. The US authorities predicted that in a few years' time to come, the number of Chinese students studying in the UK would possibly exceed that in the US.
A few years ago, only some 3,000 Chinese students went to study in the UK every year while the year of 2001 saw the number of Chinese students surging six times, making the Chinese students numbering the first among all other foreigners studying in the UK. The upsurge of students to study in the UK will exert a great influence on promoting the cultural exchanges between the two countries and will certainly make the British look at China's booming economy with new eyes.
With more foreign universities eyeing China's huge education market, Chinese students have a wide range of choices for studying abroad.
