A legislator from Sri Lanka's main opposition People's Alliance (PA)of President Chandrika Kumaratunga was arrested and remanded Monday, police said.
A court in the central town of Kandy, about 120 kilometers northeast of capital Colombo, has ordered the remanding of AjanthaDe Zoysa for alleged plot to assassinate Agriculture and LivestockMinister S.B.Dissanayake in the run up to the country's parliamentary election held on December 5 last year.
The Kandy Additional Magistrate, Pradeep Hettiarachchi,remandedDe Zoysa and two others including a PA electoral organizer until March 4.
They were involved in an alleged plot to assassinate Dissanayake, a key defector from the PA to the ruling United National Party (UNP), whose defection triggered the downfall of the PA government in the December 5 parliamentary election.
De Zoysa became the fourth PA legislator to be arrested for their alleged role in pre-election violence.
Last week police arrested Anuruddha Ratwatte, former Minister of Power and Energy and Deputy Defense Minister for alleged involvement on the massacre of 10 Muslim youths in Kandy on the December 5 election day.
