French President Jacques Chirac said Saturday that the exchange of views between leaders of the United States and China contribute to world peace and stability.
He made the remarks during a 45-minute telephone conversation with Chinese President Jiang Zemin, which covered a wide range of international and bilateral issues, especially U.S. President George W. Bush's recent Asian tour, said presidency spokeswoman, Catherine Colonna.
Chirac said he was glad to notice that "a dialogue of quality is going on between the United States and China. It is in fact an important element of world stability," the spokeswoman said quoting Chirac.
President Bush paid a 30-hour visit to China Thursday and Friday. This was his second visit to the country since he came to office early last year. His Asian tour also took him to Japan and Korea.
The French and Chinese leaders also reviewed the latest developments of France-China relations in political, economic and cultural fields, she added.
Their discussion focused in particular on preparations for the Franco-Chinese 2003-2004 cultural years, a major cultural exchange event between the two countries.
"They agreed that our bilateral relations are very good and we should pursue the development," said the spokeswoman.
