The Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebels have signed a permanent ceasefire as a crucial step toward ending their 18-year civil war.

The ceasefire agreement signed by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and separatist rebels will take effect on February 23.
