The central government will unswervingly support the SAR chief executive and the SAR government in administrating Hong Kong in accordance with the Basic Law and unswervingly help maintain long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, a central government official said here Thursday.

Jiang Enzhu, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region(HKSAR), made the remarks at a cocktail party held by the liaison office to celebrate the arrival of the Chinese lunar new year.

In his speech, Jiang said the central government will "unswervingly carry out the principle of 'one country, two systems,' 'Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong,' and a high degree of autonomy."

In the past year, China experienced many grand and happy events,Jiang said, citing China's strong 7.8 percent growth rate and its WTO entry as examples. "The sound development of our motherland heralds a bright future for Hong Kong," he said.

Following the Asian financial crisis, Hong Kong again met severe economic hardships last year. However, the overall nationalsituation had produced a very powerful, positive effect on Hong Kong whereas the central government put forth in time a series of measures helpful to Hong Kong's economic development, he said.

The SAR government, under Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, led Hong Kong compatriots in a great effort to overcome various difficulties and succeeded in consolidating Hong Kong's status as an international financial, trade and shipping center, and maintaining its prosperity and stability, he said.

Jiang expressed confidence that with Hong Kong's advantages in various fields as well as its internal and external favorable factors, and with the concerted efforts of the more than six million Hong Kong people, Hong Kong's economy is sure to "flourishin full bloom."

The five years since Hong Kong's return to the motherland are five years of great success in the implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle and five years of effective administration by the Hong Kong SAR government in accordance with the Basic Law, Jiang said.

The achievements over the five years are hard-earned, and the experience thus gained is especially valuable as it has laid a solid foundation for the further development of the Hong Kong SAR,he noted.

The liaison office will continue to do its duties empowered by the central government and strive unremittingly to implement the principle of "one country, two systems" and to maintain prosperityand stability of Hong Kong, Jiang said.

Present at the cocktail party were some 3,000 guests from various walks of life, including high-ranking officials and foreign diplomats. HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and Vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Ying Tung Fok also attended the party.
