Occupation, Security Remain Key Problems in Mideast, Annan Says
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Thursday that "the news from the Middle East is grim" and "the key problems remain occupation, security -- the need to end violence including terrorism, and economic deprivation and suffering."
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Thursday that "the news from the Middle East is grim" and "the key problems remain occupation, security -- the need to end violence including terrorism, and economic deprivation and suffering."
Annan, addressing an emergent open Security Council meeting, said, "These are inter-linked problems, encompassing the political, security and economic domains."
The open council meeting was held at the request of Palestinians following the Israeli attacks on the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including the office of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
