Premier Zhu Rongji presided over the 55th executive meeting of the State Council Wednesday, which examined and adopted, in principle, draft regulations for settling medical malpractice cases.

Sources from the meeting said that the issue has caused wide concern recently, since it involves the legal interests of both patients and hospitals and their medical staff.

"It is necessary to enact the regulations on the basis of the measures that were adopted in 1987," said the sources.

The draft regulations will be implemented as soon as possible after further amendment.
