Cooperation between Fujian Province, east China, and Taiwan in the agricultural sector is developing rapidly, a local official in charge of bilateral cooperation affairs said.

To date, Taiwan investors have introduced more than 700 advanced production technologies to Fujian. These have been in crop and plant cultivation, livestock breeding, processing of farmproduce, plant protection and fertilizer production, according to Huang Xuhua, secretary of the agricultural branch of the Fujian Provincial Association for the Promotion of Fujian-Taiwan Economicand Cultural Exchanges.

Huang said that among all the Taiwanese-funded agricultural businesses in the province, 22 percent are engaged in crop and plant cultivation, 19 percent in livestock breeding, and 59 percent in farm produce processing.

These businesses not only bring huge economic benefit to FujianProvince, but also employ a great number of unemployed rural laborers, Huang said.

Established in 1997, the Fuzhou-Zhangzhou Experiment Zone for Cross-Straits Agricultural Cooperation has attracted 449 Taiwanese-funded agricultural projects, involving contractual Taiwanese investment worth 860 million U.S. dollars.

Fujian, which faces Taiwan across the Taiwan Straits, has set up a group of development zones for Taiwanese investment and cross-Straits agricultural cooperation and has begun trial direct air services across the Taiwan Straits.
